Five-Star FABULOUS

Sexy! That’s how this home is regularly described by guests as they stroll through,” says designer Alison Knapp. “They’re enveloped in a dreamlike lounge-style aesthetic.” And the mood is made decidedly more mysterious due to the home’s hidden doorways, intriguing asymmetry and large-scale ceiling adornments. “Everything here is bigger than life, and credit for that goes to the fearlessness of the homeowners,” says Alison. “They knew what they liked, so we took their vision and ran with it.” A baby grand piano sits in the sumptuous cocktail parlour so friends can riff over drinks, and in the great room, feather-soft seating and a soothing smoke-and-sand palette invite guests to linger. Throughout the home, bold moves with wood are contrasted with brave moves with glass. “Because when you go big with…

HEALTHY HAIR DIAGNOSIS: Dyed hair, swimming in chlorinated water and UV exposure don’t mix. The result: dry, brittle hair, split ends and a lack of shine. TO DO: Healthy hair starts at the scalp, an often overlooked part of any hair-care routine. The first step to great hair is to exfoliate the scalp twice a month, which is known to stimulate blood circulation while deeply cleansing your hair and removing buildup. In your everyday routine, try spacing out shampoos every two or three days, even more if possible, and proceed delicately so you don’t stress already dry and fragile hair. For the same reasons, opt for a brush with soft bristles, whether they’re made of synthetic material or boar bristles. PLANNING ON SPENDING YOUR SUMMER BY THE POOL? Hair sunscreen is essential, whether it…

SCALE TALK

Remember, safety first This is not so much a Letter to the Editor as maybe a safety tip. Reading the July/August 2022 FSM and Darren Roberts’ article on building the resin Collect-Aire 1/48 scale AJ Savage, I was surprised that there was no mention about the possible health effects of resin dust. I always wet sand with lots of water to keep the dust down. I was particularly concerned with Photo 14 where he suggests using an abrasive bit in a rotary tool but doesn’t mention that it’s a good idea to wear a mask when doing so. That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed the article and the issue as a whole. I have numerous resin kits (Chorozsy-Modelbud, Planet Models, Uni-craft, etc.), so it’s always nice to see the inclusion of…

CALM&COLLECTED

THE GRUELLING BUSINESS OF purging and packing a lifetime’s worth of possessions is not something you normally do more than once. And yet Debra and Barry Campbell did just that. “The move to our previous apartment was more of a flattening,” says Debra from her new living room. “The square footage of our last apartment was similar to our previous family home, except all on one level. The move to this apartment was when the real downsizing happened.” Their former home, a 4,700-square-foot apartment in midtown Toronto, was featured in — and on the cover of — our 2016 Trends issue. That custom-built residence was a passion project between the couple and their longtime designer Alex Chapman. The Campbells, who had been empty-nesters for some time, were happy there. Their adult sons…

NESTING PLACE

If this mountain refuge appears to be a study in nostalgic calm, it’s intentional. “My husband, Louis, and I wanted a reinterpretation of the simple cottages that we knew when we were young: ones that smelled like wood and were decorated with bits of nature,” says Jacinthe Piotte, a decor specialist, art director and co-owner of Maison Tuuli. The Montreal-based couple and their 17-year-old son, Maël, escape as often as they can to their four-season cottage in St-Donat, Que. “We call our cottage The Nest, as it really does feel like our family’s nest,” says Jacinthe. “It’s our magical dream come true.” “WE WANTED THE COTTAGE TO BLEND IN WITH NATURE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.”“THIS IS OUR WINTER PARADISE – OUTSIDE WE SKI AND SNOWSHOE, AND INSIDE WE RELAX BY THE…

Ever found yourself sitting on the couch of an evening wondering what to watch? As you scroll through all the listings, you decide you’re not much in the mood for investing in a 22-episode season of the ’80s sitcom now showing in reruns, you don’t have the mental band-width to tackle the existentialism of the new film starring Hollywood’s latest ingenue, and that sci-fi/crime/fantasy/sexcapade is just too riddled with ridiculousness to wrap your head around. LONDON a royal destination

London has a reputation for being expensive, but it is possible to enjoy its attractions without breaking the bank. Most museums have free admission, and a stroll in one of the city’s royal parks (Bushy Park, Green Park, Greenwich Park, Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, Regent’s Park, Richmond Park and St James’s Park) is a great way to spend a morning or afternoon. Regent’s Park, located in the north of the city, is home to the London Zoo as well as the Queen’s Rose Garden at Queen Mary’s Gardens. More than 12,000 roses make up this olfactory extravaganza—it's a magical place not to be missed during the first two weeks of June. Hyde Park is central London’s largest park. Don’t know where to start when it comes to hanging art on your blank walls? These tips and tricks will bring impact to your collection and instant character to your rooms. Group Energy I love how a gallery wall can make an empty wall instantly stylish. A salon-style gallery – a grouping of mixed art – offers flexibility because you can display art, photos and mementoes of different sizes and styles. Although a great salon-style wall looks effortless, it requires planning and consideration of scale, spacing and palette. First, arrange the collection on the floor with the largest piece in the centre or slightly off-centre; then arrange other works around it, with the visually heavy pieces closer to the bottom. Try to keep the spacing a few inches apart and consistent. Salon-style…

HYBRID EXPLOSION UPENDS GAMMA-RAY SCIENCE

HYBRID EXPLOSION UPENDS GAMMA-RAY SCIENCE

In 2021, a flash of high-energy gamma rays attracted the attention of both NASA’s Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory and its Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. Because gammaray bursts are both rare and short-lived — sometimes as brief as milliseconds — an automated alert shot out to telescopes around the world, inviting them to immediately scour the area for further signals. Telescopes from Hawaii to Spain turned their eyes to a spot in space a billion light-years away in the constellation Bootes. They collected data at multiple wavelengths, from X-rays to visible to infrared. Together, the data told a shocking story. The event, known as GRB211211A, did not fit into either of the two neat categories astronomers usually use to sort gamma-ray bursts. Instead, it contained elements of both, and is now causing…

Corvette traditionalists, pour yourselves a drink and take a deep breath. Chevrolet’s halo car has gone electric. We’ll pause while you dry-heave. You good? There’s more. It’s also all-wheel drive. Take a beat. Breathe into a paper bag. Sure, it’s new and scary, but rest assured that the 2024 Corvette E-Ray’s intentions are not to placate environmentalists or chase the trendiest new tech. Instead, this car is designed to do what the best Corvettes have always done: take performance to the next level. Performance gains were immediate when Chevrolet made the switch to a mid-engine platform in the Corvette. Traction greatly increased with the bulk of the mass over the rear wheels. The Stingray and the Z06 are the quickest Corvettes since the nameplate arrived some 70 years ago. Relocating the engine also…

Q CHRISTA ASKS… My husband and I are proud to have started a successful small business that’s been open for six years. The issue: A lot of people give us unsolicited business advice, which often includes ideas we’ve already implemented or thought of. Is there a nice way to shut down these “business experts” without coming across as someone who thinks she knows it all? I definitely don’t! Excuse me. Congratulations to you and your husband for starting a successful small business. In this economy? That’s amazing. And the fact that you two can work together—honey, you guys are winning. When family members want to give me advice about my career, I ask them, “Are you a Hollywood agent? Are you a manager? OK, then let’s talk about something else.” If my family…

Electric vs. Gas Cars: What Are the Hidden Environmental Costs of EVs?

Electric vehicles are largely seen as an environmental good and a tool for slowing climate change. But are electric vehicles (EVs) really as green as we think they are? All-electric vehicles and hybrids produce low or no exhaust emissions. That means virtually zero greenhouse gas emissions produced by the vehicles themselves—definitely a good thing for the environment. But other factors come into play when determining how much pollution your electric vehicle generates. These include where your local power grid gets its electricity, what time of day you charge, the climate where you live, the battery manufacturing process, and your driving patterns. The above five factors all affect an EV’s performance—and how much, if any, of a negative environmental impact it has. Let’s look at each in turn. 1. SOURCES OF ELECTRICITY Electric cars generate…

Got (non-dairy) milk?

“People have been drinking milk for thousands of years, so it’s technically an ancient food with a lot of nutritional benefits because it’s also a whole food,” says Nishta Saxena, a Toronto-based registered dietitian and owner of Vibrant Nutrition. “There are studies showing that nutri ents are absorbed better when we’re consuming food that’s naturally occurring and in its most whole form,” she says. And dairy is loaded with calcium, a full spectrum of B vitamins, phosphorus, key fatty acids and protein. Plus, milk is fortified with vitamin D. In addition, you can opt for milk from brands that farm grass-fed cows, ones that contain A2 protein (which can make it easier to digest), and ones that offer certified organic milk. “Within the cow’s milk market there a variety of choices.” But…

A Kidnapping Hoax?

For more than five years, the sunny community of Redding, Calif., has held its collective breath, anxious about safety, concerned violent criminals were at large, maybe still living among them. After all, it was there that Sherri Papini, a 34-year-old mother of two, vanished without a trace on Nov. 2, 2016, while on a mid-morning jog. Even the joy and relief that her Thanksgiving Day return brought was clouded by Sherri’s shocking story of her kidnapping—two Hispanic women took her at gunpoint and kept her chained in a bedroom for 22 harrowing days. “I was warned that it’s not safe for women to run by themselves,” says Sarah Bank, who moved to Redding around the time of Sherri’s case. “You just don’t know what’s out there.” Now, police say, there was never…

Q IF A CREWED SPACECRAFT COULD BE BUILT TO TRAVEL AT OR NEAR THE SPEED OF LIGHT, HOW LONG WOULD IT TAKE TO ACHIEVE THAT SPEED WITHOUT CRUSHING THE HUMAN OCCUPANTS? Lawrence Schwab Phoenix, Arizona A Despite what science fiction may suggest, humanity will never be able to travel at the speed of light. That said, we could theoretically get close. To cause the fewest problems for our human occupants, it would best to maintain the acceleration our body is familiar with: Earth’s gravitational pull. At the surface of our planet, that is 32.2 feet/second2 (9.8 meters/second2). Accelerating at that rate, from the perspective of the traveler it would take 2.65 years to reach 99 percent the speed of light. To better appreciate the result, consider that such a traveler wants to reach…

Greatest of All Time: goat milk

THE BENEFITS GOT MINERALS? Goat milk is easily assimilated into the body and enhances the availability of nutrients present in it. Reported to have a higher bioavailability of many important minerals, goat milk is a source of calcium, potassium, chloride, copper, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, selenium and zinc. Consumption of goat milk encourages the absorption of many of these minerals during digestion. Because of this, studies suggest that goat milk could help prevent diseases such as anemia and bone demineralization, as well as other malabsorption syndromes. DIGESTION QUESTION Goat milk is thought to be more easily digestible than cow milk. It contains smaller fat globules that form a softer curd in the acidic environment of the stomach. These softer curds are more quickly broken down by stomach enzymes. Research suggests that cow milk intolerance is…

Mon burnout parental

Chaque consigne boudée me faisait grincer des dents. Quand mes enfants me proposaient une…

Retirement invites many personal pursuits, and in this case, it was a home makeover. “Before retiring, the owner was an on-the-go professional who lived here with nothing but three televisions, a floor lamp and a folding chair,” says designer Lindsey Levy. She and her team elevated the look from empty to elegant, with a full renovation of the 1,200-square-foot space that saw builder finishes and dark wood floors replaced with custom cabinetry, terrazzo tiles and thoughtful furnishings. Says Lindsey: “We focused on craftsmanship to create a refined space ideal for entertaining and just as comfy for a quiet night at home.” And all without a folding chair in sight. 1 We will be installing wood floors in our home. Stain finishes, styles and plank sizes seem to be all over the map these days. What style of flooring would update the look of our home without being too trendy? Brian H., Toronto S@H Wood floor styles tend to change every 10 to 15 years. That doesn’t mean the material itself goes out of style, but rather that the popularity of certain finishes and application styles – which are more susceptible to trends – ebbs and flows. For some time, we’ve seen a lot of pale, wide plank flooring. We’ve also seen the return of herringbone for a more classic European look. The most versatile wood floor (which also has longevity) is a medium plank oak in a walnut stain. Oak is…

WHEN YOU LIVE IN A HOUSE that looks like a castle, you get used to people pausing on the sidewalk to admire its turrets, columns, corbels and architectural bling. But designer Michael Godmer’s first look inside this 127-year-old townhouse in Westmount, Que., a famously tranquil, affluent city just a stone’s throw from Montreal, wasn’t what he expected. The clients — a couple who had recently purchased their first property together — had hired Michael Godmer Studio to transform the interiors, and they warned Michael that the ghost of the previous owners’ taste and furniture still lingered. “Just before I entered the house, my clients said, ‘Everything you’ll see inside is the opposite of us,’ ” says Michael. “It was all very white and clean and glossy and futuristic — not quite…

PAINT PALETTE of the month WE’RE INSPIRED BY… green. Our colour-hungry eyes are tired of shades of grey in the landscape. Maybe you’re tired of them in your rooms, too. Why not redecorate with this happy hue and bring a sense of the great outdoors indoors? We think lovely green is one shade that’s perennially in style. Green “The Perseverance wool rug hints at Brutalist design, with bold graphic forms that hark back to other designs in the collection.” Perseverance wool RUG, from $308, Renwil, renwil.com. INSPIRED DESIGN Kudos to designer and Style at Home columnist Arren Williams! His collection at trade-only retailer Renwil (a trusted one-stop shop for designers) is growing. “The collection expands on some of my favourite design moments, like Brutalism and Midcentury Modern, as well as a touch of ’80s Post-Modernism,” says Arren.…

Soulful Style

Second time’s the charm! Jessica McGouran, the principal designer behind Jessica Leigh Interiors in Toronto, had great success renovating this couple’s previous house. The financial professionals – Megan Deeks and Simon Paabor – have a toddler and two English Bulldogs and often entertain friends and family. They crave warm, relaxing, dynamic interiors. But when they bought this Victorian in the city’s east end, it was obvious the 2,300-square-foot abode needed an uplift. “They missed their old house and the personalization we had given them,” says Jessica. But the structure was sound and the layout had good flow. And, she says, “It had charming Victorian details, such as the beautiful front porch.” That said, the kitchen’s white and chrome scheme felt frosty. “They wanted something warmer, with more bronze and gold.” During…

The WORLD of COMETS

LITTLE MEANS MORE to me than comets. While in the sixth grade at Roslyn School in Montreal, I delivered the first of more than 2,500 lectures I’ve given in my life. The subject I chose for this first talk was comets, and it’s amazing to me to compare what we knew about comets then with what we know now. For example, all those years ago, we knew of a few hundred comets; now we know of at least 4,000. The most famous of all comets, Halley’s Comet, last rounded the Sun on Feb. 9, 1986. Twenty-one years before that, on Dec. 17, 1965, I began searching telescopically for comets. On Nov. 13, 1984, I discovered my first. I’ll never forget my view of a brand-new comet that no one else had…

Loving the latest in kitchen storage and cabinetry trends? Follow along and we’ll look at ways to design, integrate, conceal and organize so that your kitchen is as inviting as the rest of your home. Cabinet Trends As we move away from all-white kitchens, we’re seeing big changes in cabinetry and storage options. Wood has made a comeback, but also populating our social media feeds are bold-colour and two-tone kitchens. Detailed cabinetry millwork – fluting, curves, edging and mesh screens – add wow factor and blend in with our living spaces. At the same time, we’re losing upper cabinets and opting for counter-to-ceiling towers. In the kitchen above, designer Alyssa Papa replaced the upper cabinets with a counter tower, complete with a glamorous wallpapered interior. The counter tower provides major storage and frees…

THIS & THAT

“This home is a study in contrast, but it’s not black and white,” says designer Rachel Deeks. “Instead, we contrasted dark rooms with light rooms. So you pass from spaces adorned in deep blues and charcoal tones into areas where the reigning tones are whites, oatmeal and blush. It’s contrast, but it’s room to room, not detail to detail.” Rachel’s clever decision to embrace contrast as a theme emerged as she got to know the clients. “They’re a young family with two boys, ages five and seven,” she says. “When I met them, they’d just taken this huge leap – to knock down an old house on this lot and replace it with a custom-for-them new-build. They were very clear about wanting this new home to reflect how they live.”…

Apple iPhone 13: A Battery-Life Beast

Apple iPhone 13: A Battery-Life Beast

The Apple iPhone 13 is a battery-life beast, with far greater longevity than previous midrange smartphones. While we appreciate the greater pocketability of the iPhone 13 mini, unimpressive sales of the iPhone 12 mini taught us that most people prefer long battery life to a petite form factor. So even though other upgrades from the previous generation are nearly unnoticeable here, the battery boost is so profound that it’s definitely worth the $100 premium over a standard-size iPhone 12. And if you’re upgrading from an earlier iPhone, you’ll find a lot of welcome enhancements in power and camera quality. That makes the iPhone 13 the best bet for most buyers, as well as a winner of our Editors’ Choice award. PROS: Long battery life. Fast, smooth performance. Camera makes it easy…

Here’s Why Craigslist Still Looks the Same After 25-Plus Years

Here’s Why Craigslist Still Looks the Same After 25-Plus Years

Craigslist emerged in 1995 to connect strangers through a free, web-based platform that has endured as rival services including Zillow, Facebook Marketplace, and countless dating apps emerged with advanced features and slick interfaces. These platforms survive on advertising and subscription revenue. Craigslist, of course, has none of that. Over the years, the OG online marketplace has all but refused to modernize; its mobile app came out in 2019, only after nearly 25 years in business. Why does the website still look the same after so many decades? That was the main question I had when I sat down for a video call with craigslist founder Craig Newmark, who joined me from the New York City apartment he shares with his wife, Eileen Whelpley. Newmark stepped down as CEO of craigslist in 2000 after…

The reckoning

IN 230 YEARS the House of Representatives voted for the president to be impeached just twice. In only 13 months it has doubled the total by indicting Donald Trump twice more. Now the Senate should issue another historical rebuke by making him the first American president in history to be convicted. The article of impeachment that passed on January 13th accuses Mr Trump of inciting an insurrection (see United States section). Stand back, for a moment, and consider the enormity of his actions. As president, he tried to cling to power by overturning an election that he had unambiguously lost. First, he spread a big lie in a months-long campaign to convince his voters that the election was a fraud and that the media, the courts and the politicians who clung…

hatchbacks that go grrr

early in the indoctrination process, a car enthusiast learns of the impossibility of a single vehicle that excels in every area. A low-slung, lightweight sports car is inherently at odds with cargo and passenger space. That’s why we’re all dreaming of and scheming toward having a diverse fleet at the ready, right? But these three cars are about as close as you can get to the do-it-all ideal, with adult-habitable back seats, hatchback cargo spaciousness, and track capability that lets them hang with sports cars from not that long ago. Plus, their mid-$40,000s prices are no higher than the new-car average. The newest nameplate in this bunch is the GR Corolla. It represents the third vehicle in Toyota’s increasingly impressive Gazoo Racing division arsenal. Based on the Corolla hatchback that we know…

2021 MINI JOHN COOPER WORKS GP

The 301-hp Mini darts to a narrow front-drive Lightning Lap record. 3:03.8 With its front tires furiously trying to hook up, the angriest Mini pulls onto the front straight 0.9 second behind Lightning Lap’s front-drive champ, the Honda Civic Type R. But a mere 14.3 seconds later, the GP closes the gap and noses ahead of the Type R by a tenth, thus snatching the front-drive title. We knew that the GP’s 301 horsepower—32 percent more than the standard JCW model offers—was going to be a big part of the Mini’s lap, but it turned out to be the deciding factor in its success. Without its ability to dramatically reel in the Honda on the Grand Course’s two long straights, the GP wouldn’t have had a chance against the 306-hp Type R. Lower and…

Vim, Vigor, and Vin

The Fast in the VinFast name is an acronym in Vietnamese, but it’s not lost on us, or the company’s founders, that in English it suggests something done quickly. The new Vietnamese automotive brand was announced in the fall of 2017, and barely a year later, VinFast had three gasoline-powered cars in development and an electric-scooter factory. By the summer of 2019, the company had built an 827-acre complex in Hai Phong and was delivering its first cars. In 2021, founder Pham Nhat Vuong announced that VinFast would begin pivoting to EVs. Now it’s selling electric scooters, electric buses, and the VF e34, a small electric SUV, with promises of two larger versions to come, the VF8 and the VF9. The 20 Most Influential PCs of the Past 40 Years

In 1982, PC Magazine was born at a crucial time in the history of computing: right as microprocessors were expanding from 8-bit to 16-bit architecture, and computers were changing from consumer novelties to business essentials. So to commemorate our 40th anniversary, we couldn’t resist looking back at the PCs that had the greatest impact—and to be honest, narrowing the list down to a mere 20 was no small feat. Yes, we know: The first entry in this list is a cheat, as the IBM PC (released in August 1981) predates our first issue (February-March 1982). We also know the IBM PC was no more the first personal computer than ours was the first computer magazine—the MITS Altair 8800 kit reached hobbyists in 1975, with the Apple II narrowly beating the Radio…

BLACK HOLE AT MILKY WAY’S CENTER IMAGED FOR FIRST TIME

In a triumph of observation and data processing, the astronomers of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) Collaboration have captured the firstever picture of the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way Galaxy. The black hole is named Sagittarius A* (Sgr A* for short, pronounced “sadge A-star”). The reveal of its image received an international rollout May 12 in simultaneous press conferences on four continents. The team also published their results the same day in a special issue of The Astrophysical Journal Letters. The image represents 3.5 million gigabytes of data taken at millimeter wavelengths by eight radio telescopes around the world. “It took several years to refine our image and confirm what we had,” said Feryal Özel, an astronomer at the University of Arizona in Tucson, at a press…

He often used offcuts of meat like beef rib “fingers,” chunks from between the bones of a short rib, out of necessity. “It’s well-marbled, so you’re getting the best parts of the short rib that others usually throw away,” says David. Old & New A new, custom-made glass fronted wine cupboard is a contemporary complement to the home’s original circa 1920 archway and transom window. “We wanted to display Melissa and Matt’s wine collection and this built-in feels like a piece of art as you enter the kitchen,” says designer Kerry Dalton. The island’s waterfall treatment furthers the visual appeal, and a 16-foot-long sliding glass door lets in lots of natural light. Island Dreams The expansive new kitchen fulfills Melissa’s desire for an island and an open-concept design (the old kitchen was tucked behind the smaller archway and is now a butler’s pantry). 6 FITNESS RULES THAT WERE MADE TO BE BROKEN

Every season, it seems like there’s a new fitness tenet to follow or must-do mantra to guide us. But what if those golden rules are really sapping your physique changes, harming your recovery and sabotaging your wellness journey? We asked the experts to walk us through a few of the classic fitness rules that should be smashed, immediately. NEW APPROACH OLD RULE #1 IF YOUR MUSCLES ARE SORE, YOU NEED TO STRETCH “People think that when they feel stiff and tight it’s because their muscles need to stretch,” says Miranda Esmonde-White, a Canadian fitness pioneer and author of The Movement Miracle, a new book on stretching and strengthening. Unfortunately, the benefits of traditional stretching for stiffness are fleeting, and don’t really address the problem, she says. “Stiffness is caused when a joint is tight…

Vintage and contemporary artwork lend lively colour that’s furthered by the sectional. “It pops with colour but remains widely neutral thanks to its subtle, textured wool fabric. The metal legs keep it light and airy.” Set in an early 1900s-constructed heritage building, this 1,300-square-foot triplex had charming original bones – hardwood floors, six-inch baseboards and wooden windows – that were keepers. But other elements, such as a lack of storage, no work-from-home spaces, a dated kitchen and…

Inside the universe’s BIGGEST BLASTS

Inside the universe’s BIGGEST BLASTS

SUPERNOVAE ARE THE most spectacular fireworks in the universe. Just one such explosion can briefly outshine the rest of the stars in a galaxy combined. Astronomers have become adept at spotting these events across the cosmos, with particular attention to a specific class called type Ia supernovae. Much of modern cosmology rests on these events. That’s because thanks to their intrinsic physics, these stellar blasts should always have the same intrinsic brightness. This property makes them excellent distance indicators, which allows astronomers to obtain their distance simply by observing how dim their light appears upon reaching Earth. Ultimately, the information gleaned by mapping type Ia supernovae across the cosmos has allowed astronomers to measure the expansion of the universe itself. And yet, perhaps the most incredible thing about these particular supernovae is…

IS A BRUTISH PICKUP WHAT IT WILL TAKE TO DRAG THE U.S. INTO AN ELECTRIC ERA?

IS A BRUTISH PICKUP WHAT IT WILL TAKE TO DRAG THE U.S. INTO AN ELECTRIC ERA?

IT’S ALMOST TOO SIMPLE. Automakers are sprinting full speed ahead toward electric vehicles, and they need offerings that people want to buy. So why not take the bestselling vehicle—the Ford F-150—and make it an EV? Bingo. Some 200,000 people have queued up to buy Ford’s electric pickup, before they could even see one up close or drive it. That’s 10 times the initial annual volume Ford was planning for the Lightning. After multiple expansions to its plant in Dearborn, Michigan, Ford will eventually be able to build 150,000 a year. Are F-150 buyers ready to make the switch to electric? Not exactly, as more than half of reservation holders have never owned a Ford vehicle. These folks won’t appreciate how F-150-familiar the Lightning feels. All Lightnings have the F-150’s generous four-door crew cab and…

RED-LETTER DAY

For a car named after the last letter of the alphabet, the Z-car got off to an incredibly strong start. An instant hit when it landed on our shores in 1970, the first-generation Datsun 240Z wore a graceful long hood, a sloping fastback roofline, a squared-off Kamm tail, and a powerful overhead-cam inline-six engine driving the rear wheels. A starting price of just $3526, about $26,000 in today’s money, led to an amazing rookie year. Eventually, the 240Z became the 260Z and then the 280Z, and Datsun became Nissan. But the car’s 53-year history has been a bit of a roller coaster. Strong sales, accolades, and racing success met rising prices, a shrinking sports-car market, and eight model years of no Z at all. With the new 2023 Z, Nissan hopes…

I’ve been an H&H subscriber since I graduated as a designer in the early 1980s. I’ve loved many issues, but the November issue has brought me so much joy! I start at the back, and I was filled with happiness at the sight of the Trendwatch page (“Merry & Bright”)! I loved the cookie segment (“In for a Treat!”) and the craft ideas (“Make It Merry”). The Bettencourt cabin (“Into the Woods”) was delightful and the Betsy Brown house (“Mountain High”), sublime. Thank you always for the eye candy and inspiration. —BEVERLY McNABB, Waterloo, Ont. I just received my Christmas issue in the mail today. I read Lynda Reeves’ column (“View,” November) and it brought both a smile to my face and tears to my eyes. I loved how she said she…

WTF Is the Metaverse?

WTF Is the Metaverse?

The metaverse is in the air. Mark Zuckerberg won’t stop talking about turning Facebook into one. Zombie-strewn Fortnite says it’s on the way to becoming one. Microsoft is going to develop an enterprise one, which sounds fun. But what is it? If you’ve been nodding along and hoping that eventually people will stop talking about it, we have good news and bad news. Metaverse news is only going to increase. This is obviously the bad news. In better news, we have a quick primer to help you with the basics. So here are your questions (hopefully) answered. Hi. Hi. This is going to sound weird, but are you really here? Sure. Let’s say yes. I ask because I was just reading about Mark Zuckerberg and this metaverse thing, and it has thrown me into an existential…

Curious About Starlink’s ‘Best Effort’ Tier? Early Users Give Rave Reviews

Darren Clark lives in Michigan, where he used to receive dismal internet speeds ranging from 2.5Mbps to 3.5Mbps. The DSL internet was so bad that he’d have to drive his family elsewhere to find faster broadband and finish software and game downloads. “Many times, we ended up going to McDonald’s or out to the local Meijer grocery store for internet access,” he told PCMag. But in recent days, Clark’s home internet is getting speeds between 10Mbps and 100Mbps. The reason? He’s among the first people to try out Starlink’s Best Effort tier, the latest offering from SpaceX’s satellite internet service. “I have to say, Starlink Best Effort is a lifesaver for me and my family,” he said. “My kids are amazed that a 1GB download can finish in a couple of minutes instead…

Ç’a duré 28 ans. J’ai parfois espéré qu’il me frappe…

Waste Not, Want Not

after a trip to the grocery or farmers market, it’s more than a matter of putting everything away. Get in the habit of organizing your food for freshness from the start. You’ll save money and help the environment by keeping methane-producing food waste out of landfills. ▪ KEEP IT VISIBLE You won’t use what you don’t remember you have. Line up items neatly, keep labels facing out, and embrace clear containers. ▪ MARK IT Give everything a date—either the day you bought it or a toss date. ID leftovers and homemade items. A few minutes of labeling before storing will pay off. ▪ DECANT IT Separate food into portions you’re likely to use. It will all stay fresher longer than if you continually draw from one big package. ARTEMIS 1 COMPLETES HISTORIC MOON MISSION

» NASA has finally taken its first small step toward sending humans back to the Moon. Over the course of a 25-day flight, the uncrewed Artemis 1 mission launched aboard NASA’s brand-new Space Launch System (SLS), looped around the Moon twice thanks to the European-built Service Module, and splashed down with the Orion capsule off Mexico’s Baja California coast on Dec. 11 — the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 17 Moon landing. In the runup to the launch, NASA officials had emphasized that the mission was a test flight. “We are stressing Orion beyond what it was designed for,” said Bob Cabana, NASA’s associate administrator, at a briefing. But Artemis 1 passed with flying colors, proving that the hardware meant to fly humans to the Moon is up to the task. TRY, TRY…

PRESERVING 101

10 STEPS to Perfect Preserves 1. Fill boiling water canner or large saucepan two-thirds full of hot water. About 30 minutes before filling jars, start to boil. (Go to canadianliving.com/sterilize jars to see our video on how to prep containers for preserving.) 2. Use only new lids and canning jars that are free of nicks and cracks. Heat lids in small saucepan of water until hot and sealing compound is softened. 3. Wash, rinse and air-dry jars. Ten minutes before filling, place jars, metal funnel and ½-cup measure in canning rack; boil for 10 minutes. 4. Fill jars using funnel and measure; be sure to leave recommended headspace. Wipe rims with damp paper towel. 5. Remove air bubbles with rubber spatula, gently stirring preparation. Adjust fill height as needed. 6. Centre lids on jars; screw on bands…

Colour Ways

Paint is the quickest way to change the look of a room, but painting the walls is just one way to transform a space. Depending on your tolerance for colour, paint can work its magic in big applications, small gestures and everything in between. Just remember, however you use paint, the colour will impact every element in the room. Follow along for tips on different ways to use paint and how to make sure the new hue works in your decor. Colour with Confidence If you’re painting a room an eye-catching new colour, any furnishing in a soft neutral will work with it. Think: a sand-toned linen sofa, wooden case goods and natural stone. Sometimes, layering in pillows, throws and accessories in tones similar to the new hue is enough to help…

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT HAS BEEN the No. 1 focus for the new Canadiens management team – executive VP of hockey operations Jeff Gorton, GM Kent Hughes and coach Martin St-Louis. Gorton, who was hired after Marc Bergevin’s firing in November 2021, has since made important adds by hiring Adam Nicholas as director of hockey development and Christopher Boucher as director of analytics. “Drafting, developing, acquiring as many good players as you can and hopefully, aggressively, turn this thing around,” said Gorton about rebuilding a team coming off a last-place finish in 2021-22. “That’s the focus.” B+ | RANK: 11TH 1.

PAINT PALETTE of the month WE’RE INSPIRED BY… beige! Remember when beige was a bad word? It meant bland and boring. But is bread boring? No. It’s a staple, and so is this hue.
